Back To Our Roots.
Founded in 2007, zG is the seamless blend between two former Bay Area women's ultimate teams -- Homebrood and Skyline (previously Heroine). We'd link you to the old websites, but that was before team websites existed! Old school... but back to us:
2007. In our very first tournament together, clad in black, thick cotton, we showed the Northwest that we were the real deal by winning Solstice. Coach Alex "Dutchy" Ghesquiere and captains Kath Ratcliff, Krista McDonald, and Kelley Bagby lead us to several more impressive tournament finishes, including a tournament win at Colorado Cup (in lightweight capilene, no less). Our hard work paid off: at Regionals in picturesque Stevinson, CA, Zeitgeist beat Vancouver's Traffic on double game point to secure the 3rd and final Northwest bid to the UPA Club Championships. Thankful to have another month together, we put even more work in on the field and on the track. Highlights included post-practice pool parties in Fremont and a Blue Angels show at a practice on Treasure Island that Coach called "character building." In our first UPA Championships we came out of the super competitive Pool D to make a strong quarterfinals appearance, eventually finishing 8th. We finished off the weekend by letting JT participate in our team photo, starting the side pony tradition, enjoying our umbrella ella ellas at the white sand beaches of Sarasota, making our own music, and cementing zG's place at the top of the women's game.
2008. Our sophomore season was a year of ups and downs. We lost Coach Dutchy when he returned to the Open game to captain Revolver, but our fearless captains Jamie Nuwer, Krista McDonald, and Kath Ratcliff stepped up to fill both the captaining and coaching shoes. We said goodbye to two original zG members, and added five stellar rookies. We spent the season building on what we had learned the previous year, playing to master the game, and putting team before individual. Zeitgeist traveled to Boston where we won many tough games, including a double game point win against Team Canada, a lethal combination of Traffic and Capitals. Unfortunately with Riot, Team Canada (Traffic), and Team USA (Fury) all competing in the NW Region in Burlington, WA, and only 3 bids to the Championships, Zeitgeist missed out on a repeat appearance. We settled for dressing up as the Croatian water polo team for Halloween instead.
2009. We added seven talented rookies to our list of play-makers, and a thoughtful, experienced, and dedicated coach in Chris "Woody" Sherwood. Jennifer "JD" Donnelly generously assisted zG in a consulting role, and captains Liz Flegel, Maggie McKeon, and Jamie Nuwer capped off zG's leadership. It was another season of high standards, accountability, and hard work. Our team retreat in Santa Cruz featured an intricate fitness test. The East Bay Track Pod boasted a record-breaking 12 attendees, including several Revolver players who were quoted as saying that Jen Burney's workouts were the hardest they had ever run. Ever. Zeitgeist played with poise and heart at Regionals in Corvallis, OR, besting a new Seattle team, Underground, for the 3rd of 4 bids to the Championships. In Sarasota, Zeitgeist held seed and finished 6th, qualifying for the World Ultimate Club Championships held on July 3-10, 2010 in Prague, Czech Republic.
2010. Coach Woody returned for his second season with assistant coaching help from player-turned-coach Kate Leslie. With captains Cheryl Prideaux, Liz Flegel, and Susan Batchelder at the helm, zG was psyched to recruit the top players from Lady Condors, Slackjaw, Schwa, Stanford, UCLA, Sonoma State, and AIR. Ironically, though tryouts were the earliest they had ever been, the final series roster didn't start officially playing together until August due to Worlds. This seemingly shortened season hurt us in the long run as we fell prey to a talented Traffic from Vancouver at Regionals. Of course nothing could take away from the sweaty Prague bus rides as we played to an 11th place finish in the world wearing sweet sublimated gear from Five Ultimate, the swimming holes and 80's night dancing at retreat in Chico, the frisbee clinic held for Dolby, and all the Glee watching, margarita drinking, book clubbing, and end of the season toasting. In the words of Tessa, always looking forward.
2011. The Zeitgeist 2011 season brought a lot of new blood to the Zeitgeist family. With the veterans holding down the try-out process, lead by our fearless captains Batch and Kix, we welcomed 11 new geisties to the roster, and a new, very tall coach: Ethan Schlenker. Coach of the Cal Pie Queens, he’s no newbie to Frisbee and did we mention he’s really tall? Returning to assist in the coaching department was our fantastic Kate Leslie. This rag-tag bunch sought out to learn how to play Ultimate with each other, and to have a bunch of fun in the process. Despite the drastic change in personnel from 2010, zG held true to its foundation of doing work and celebrating. Our practice weekend in Danville yielded 8 hours of Ultimate, games of “Super Lame” in the pool, amazing food (and cookies!), and a classic Zeitgeist “Heeey Raffle” with items that ranged from a blow-up doll to our Zeitgeist Oh-leven team flag. We swam in Boulder Creek at CO Cup, we camped and tubed down the American River at our team retreat, and we witnessed the birth of the “jumping team picture” tradition. At ECC, we had a HUGE come from behind win, and we helped run the STAR clinic at Sectionals where we created stations for young Ultimate players wanting to learn from the best. Despite a disappointing Regionals finish, Zeitgeist did a lot of great things this season!
